2018 Maui Steel Guitar Camp

2018 Maui Steel Guitar Camp

The 2018 Maui Steel Guitar Camp is an intensive, multi-day enrichment experience with the Hawaiian (lap) Steel Guitar. Learn about this instrument, so very important to Hawaiian culture, which almost became extinct. Learn how to play, what to play, and when to play from professional steel guitar masters. No prior experience on the instrument is required.

The camp is held annually at the location of the Maui Steel Guitar Festival. The Maui Steel Guitar Camp will lead into the Maui Steel Guitar Festival that will be held the weekend after the camp.

The Maui Steel Guitar Camp is presented by the Arts Education for Children Group and HIMELE, the Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences.

The goal of the camp is to have each attendee play class-assigned Hawaiian songs on the Hawaiian steel guitar. Three intensive Hawaiian steel guitar sessions (two in the morning and one in the afternoon) will be conducted on each day by Alan Akaka and Greg Sardinha, two of Hawaii's great steel guitar masters. Camp attendees will be given individual attention by the instructors to assist with playing skill and technique development. Each day will end with a class kanikapila which campers can hone their performance skills. At the camp's conclusion, all attendees will be able to play the class assigned song on the Hawaiian steel guitar.
